THE VALUE OF BEING BORING
To end this night I’m lying on the floor, Teddy on the couch above me, writing. It’s been a good day, though I won’t bore you with details, because it’s been a boring day. I worked. That’s about it. (Read This: How to Get Shit Done)
I didn’t do anything audacious, nothing grand, nothing adventurous. I fought a battle against the bitch in me that wanted to surf the facebook or watch the TV. At times I lost that battle but in the end I won.
Lying on this here floor I realize that the day’s gone by without hardly a word. Few conversations, maybe a hello passing someone by in the woods by my house, for the most part it was quiet but filled with focus and purpose. It was the antithesis of what we’re told our days should be.
We’re told our days should be filled with conversation, among friends and family and loved ones. As a part of a tribe we’re supposed trudge along. As a part of a group we’re supposed to explain our misery. Our goals are to be proclaimed, not actually accomplished or worked toward or chipped away at daily in an un-sexy manner.
We’re supposed to tell people about what we’re doing. Pictures of our actions must be documented so others can see that we’re living, breathing, and doing things that would make them jealous.
The truth is that most people are searching, either for themselves or something to make them feel as though they’re a part of something. Then there are those who, like I did on this wonderful day, create who they’re to become in silence. They’re quiet, boring even. Rarely do they proclaim what they’re doing nor do they waste their nights in bars trying to feel as though they’re not alone.
Alone is what they know is necessary to create.
It’s after a day like today that I realize the value in both solitude and being boring. You get a lot more done. On Saturday I would have been singing a different tune as I smoked cigars with pals and drank Scotch and laughed, busted balls, and actually learned a thing or two.
The thing about that wonderful night is that it degraded the next day. I wasn’t 100% the next day and I didn’t accomplish all that I set out to accomplish, nor did I wake up early, nor did I feel rested.
THE WORLD BELONGS TO THE RUTHLESS
The world belongs to those who are willing to do what others are seemingly incapable of doing. It belongs to those who’d rather work than party, hustle than laugh and joke around, and rise early rather than sleeping in.
The world belongs to those who can fight their natural urges and those that society throws in their face.
It belongs to those who have complete control over their focus, what they do with their time, and what they give their life to. (Read This: The Beauty of Solitude)
Most of us in society are at our hormones whim. We’re led by our emotions. We’re guided by the latest TV ad. We aren’t who we would be if we could be who we could potentially be. We’re a slave to our desires and our society has told us that our desires are what we should follow.
Following all of your desires leaves you with nothing of value accomplished. It leaves you with empty relationships and an empty heart.
As the day closes I thank God for helping me see the value in ending a day not in a bar or feeling the need to be surrounded by people, but with whiskey by my side, country music flowing into my ears, and my fingers working on something.
This article isn’t great. It’s probably filled with grammar mistakes and inconsistent tenses and much of it probably sounds like it was written by a high schooler. But by simply writing these words and editing them over I inch closer to those 20,000 hours of focused and purposeful practice that mastery requires.
And so, though my mouth has been silent, my social life has been non-existent, today has been a victory and a blessing even though it flies in the face of what society would deem successful.
If you have something you love to do or even something that interests you, work at it, and work at it daily, nightly, and with purpose and focus and intent. Don’t allow your emotions or your hormones or your desires lead you into the traps that so many fall into. (Check This Out: Find Happiness in Work. Not Work in Happiness)
