ALWAYS ASK YOURSELF, WHY NOT?

I absolutely love hanging out with people that expose me to a new way of thinking.

I think I’m a pretty ambitious guy. Rarely does a barrier stop me from pursuing something or the idea that accomplishing it is unlikely or arduous, but we all get stuck in a rut, a way of thinking. (Read This: The Beauty of Ambition)

We all get blinders, often necessarily so, so as to not get pulled off track by a new idea every 5 minutes so we can actually accomplish something with our time here.

It’s refreshing to sit and talk with people who have a different perspective on what to pursue in life, one uninhibited by society’s idea of what can be done, what should be done, and what must be done with our time here.

The other day I went golfing with a buddy. It’s been well over a year since I last hit the links so my game wasn’t all that great, but the day was.

My pal and I had a bunch of great conversations. Some were about work, others about our lady’s, but a lot were about our focus and direction in life.

It’s the direction, what we want in this life and from the next few years, that gave me a good kick in the ass.

Life is Short

So many of us have dreams, ideas, and wishes that remain as such. We brush them off as if they’re not to be taken seriously, but instead relegated to the night time or our imaginations as we work, always thinking about where we’d like to be, instead of actually going there.

I’m guilty of doing this.

Now, over the past decade I’ve built a business that allows me to work from anywhere.

For a few years I took full advantage of that fact, but in the past couple of years, with the house and the dog, I’ve slid into a mindset that sees the barriers and boundaries, not the possible freedoms.

I’ve limited my thinking to where I am and what I have.

Not good.

Golfing with this buddy, who’s thinking about taking a road trip to Patagonia from Vancouver, spending a bunch of time in Europe over the next couple of years, even has his house constantly on the market. If it’s sold, he’s gone, not looking for another place to live in the neighborhood.

It was refreshing.

It made me think.

It opened me to once again imagine adventure, to dream of possibilities that weren’t possible 100 years ago, or even 20 years ago if you take into account how I’ve built this business and what it can enable me to do.

Always Ask Yourself, Why Not?

That’s the question we should be asking.

We should be allowing ourselves to think in ways that the masses are unable to think, to think of possibilities that the masses think are impossible, and then asking the very simple question, why not?

Why can’t I make a million bucks a year?

Why can’t I write best selling books?

Why can’t I travel the world while making a living?

Why can’t I get in great shape?

Why can’t I climb that mountain or do that hunt or realize that goal?

The ‘why can’t’ isn’t answered with a ‘no reason’.

There’s a reason why you’re not doing it right now, and a reason why you haven’t yet tried, and a reason why it isn’t going to be that simple.

For example, you may have to spend a year or two or three hustling your ass off, building your business, spending almost no money, to save and work and earn and build to get everything to the point where you can fuck off to Italy, live in Sicily for a couple years and continue to grow the business while learning and traveling and having a blast.

There’s a barrier, there always is. But the barrier isn’t a finishing point, it’s something you have to solve.

If you don’t solve it, if you see barriers and you think they’re reasons to not embark on your adventure – whatever it may be – then you’re going to exist, not live.

We all have our ideals of what it means to truly live.

Most people relegate these ideals to their dreams.

Those who have to courage to shine a light on them, and then the guts to do whatever the hell needs to get done to make them a reality, these are doers, livers, adventurers.

This should be you.
