At this point… it’s no secret that men’s testosterone levels are lower than ever.
They’ve been on the decline for decades… you have less testosterone than your father did… and he had less testosterone than his grandfather did. Plus, testosterone levels start dropping for every man once you hit 30-years old.
For that reason… guys are desperately searching for ways to increase their testosterone levels. After all, it is the lifeblood of what makes us men. (read: the 13 most poweful testosterone booster foods)
And as noble as their intentions are… the problem is when most guys try to increase testosterone levels… they actually do more harm than good. In this article, I’m going to show you the top three mistakes men make when trying to boost testosterone levels.
How To Increase Testosterone Naturally Mistake: Working Out Too Much
Working out is one of the best ways to increase testosterone levels in men. It helps you build muscle and burn fat—both of which contribute to increasing testosterone. (read: how to boost testosterone naturally in men)
However, most guys go overboard when they decide to get back in shape. And they actually spend too much time in the gym—working out for an hour a day, cutting their sleep time down an hour or two to train before work, and don’t give their body enough time to rest between workouts.
I understand. When you want to get back in shape, you feel like a bullet shop out of a sniper rifle. You’re ready to go at if full-force and get to your desired body fast. But overtraining in the ways that I mentioned above, actually increase cortisol (stress hormone) levels.
The problem with that is when cortisol levels are high, testosterone levels drop.
Instead of spending all day in the gym, training 6-days a week or cutting back on sleep so you can workout, keep your training sessions under 45-minutes, train between 3-4 days per week with a day of recovery in between and get at least 8 hours of unbroken sleep each night. How To Increase Testosterone Naturally Mistake: Catabolic Cardio
There is a kind of cardio that will kill testosterone levels.
I call it “catabolic cardio.”
Catabolic cardio is steady-state, long distance cardio. Some examples are going for a two mile jog, running on a treadmill for an hour, training for a marathon… I’ve even heard of guys who do Tough Mudder training that ruined their testosterone levels trying to get ready for a race.
See, pounding the pavement for long distances causes inflammation in your joints. Inflammation then causes your cortisol levels to increase. Like I mentioned above, cortisol causes your testosterone levels to drop. Plus, cortisol has been shown to cause fat gain and muscle loss—the opposite results you want from training.
So listen, if you’re going to increase testosterone levels, I recommend staying away from this counterproductive form of cardio. At the very least, don’t make it the “bread and butter” of your training.
Personally, I like to go for a long run sometimes. I’ve got a lot of land to roam out here on the outskirts of Calgary… and it’s fun to push myself and explore new ground. So if you decide to do the same every once in a while, it won’t kill you. Just make sure to follow your run with a quick carb and protein heavy post-workout meal. That’ll help relieve the stress hormone response so it goes down quickly.
How To Increase Testosterone Naturally Mistake: Testosterone Replacement Therapy
Of the others on the list, this one’s the biggest “no-no.”
Testosterone Replacement Therapy is a shot, pill or cream that doctors give guys with low testosterone. The problem is TRT should be used as an absolute last resort for guys with low-T. But these days, doctors are passing it out like Halloween candy.
See, TRT isn’t a natural solution to increase testosterone. Instead, it’s a way to inject testosterone into your body. The problem is, when you use a pill or cream to increase testosterone levels, your body forgets how to make testosterone on its own.
So if you ever stop using TRT, your body can’t make testosterone on its own. Then, you’re screwed.
Instead of going the fake testosterone route, you need to learn how to boost testosterone levels naturally. That’s the only way you’re going to actually deal with the problem at its core. And it’s completely doable… no matter what your age or genetics. Find out how in the next section.
