7 Quotes That Every Man Must Live By

Quotes a man can live by… Do they actually make a difference? I’d say 100% yes. When we have something memorable in our minds in tough times we’re able to use such sage advice to make the correct decision.

That’s what life’s all about, making the right decision, not the easiest one, but the right one. We do that over our lifetime and we win. These quotes that follow are quotes every man can live by, use them often.

On Hard Work

“Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty… I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life. I have envied a great many people who led difficult lives and led them well.” ― Theodore Roosevelt

We forget this far too often, that nothing good can come from a soft, easy life, and that everything worthy of who you are comes on the back of effort. Yet, we despise effort and struggle even though they’re the only path to what we genuinely want in life.

For the few who recognize this and accept it, life will be good. You’ll adopt more pain and difficulty, and thus, you’ll become tougher and more worthy of a successful life. You’ll leave the weak, the soft, the envious and jealous behind and you’ll develop a great life for yourself and those whom you lead.

Effort isn’t the enemy, ease is.

On Being Soft

This is true for the society and for the individual, if you are first soft and do not have the underlying barbarian virtues, the soft, the ‘good’, the caring virtues are to no avail.

The barbarian virtues protect the softer ones, they enable them to exist. But one must first become dangerous and barbaric before he can become soft and courteous, at least for men.

Today we forget that fact and ignore it. We train our boys to be soft, weak, and meek in school systems that are built for females. Men need battle, as do boys. We need combat, we need to practice grit and toughness. We need struggle, pain, and we need to be dangerous, not just for our own sake, but for those around us who we lead, protect, and defend.

Simply put, don’t adopt a soft life. Don’t teach your boys that being kind and soft is better than being dangerous, they’re both required. A SOFT MAN IS A USELESS MAN!

We do not need more teet-sucking, videogame addicted, porn addicted boys who don’t know how to be men. Teach the barbarian virtues and the soft virtues will be liberated. (Read: the Best a Man Can Be: Toxic)

On Living Well

Better to fight for something than live for nothing. ~ Patton

Most exist, few live. Living, in its truest sense, demands more than existing. It requires struggle, something to fight for, to fight against, and to defeat. Often that battle is internal, sometimes it’s external, but there is always attrition in a life well lived.

Life is not peaceful. It is not easy. It’s a struggle. The more you accept that there is a struggle, and the greater the struggle you take on to conquer, the better your life will be.

‘Tis better to fight for something than live for nothing. What are you doing? What battle are you engaged in? What enemy are your aiming to defeat? What soul are you trying to take? What legacy are you working on building? No great thing is won by chance, no grand life is created accidentally. Fight for something, and live, or go through the motions and exist, waiting for a deathbed with regret as your only bedmate.

On Government

It is hard to imagine a more stupid or more dangerous way of making decisions than by putting those decisions in the hands of people who pay no price for being wrong. ~ Thomas Sowell

Men, be suspicious of any government, be they right, left, or center, but especially the left. You cannot gain more power as a modern government without adopting socialist and communist policies. Both literally hand more power to a government who is not at all accountable for the decisions they make. Men choose freedom, we choose liberty, we want to bare the brunt of the consequences for our own actions, we do not want to have to play the dangerous game of finding out if a government will make the right decision over time.

We do not want higher taxes. Men don’t want strict gun laws because all they do is infringe on the legal gun owner and do nothing to dissuade the criminal, much like an unarmed man does little to dissuade a criminal whereas an armed man does in spades. We do not want our property rights infringed upon. Our land is our land, it gives us a stake in our country, pride in where we live and how we care for our home. The more a government grows the less freedom there can be.

On Freedom

People are afraid of responsibility, especially today. We’d rather have someone else make decisions for us, like where to put our money, how to use it, what laws we abide by, and how we protect our homes. Men, however, want more responsibility. we want to be judged for our actions, we don’t want someone else to be responsible for anything in our lives. We need responsibility, we crave it, because responsibility is freedom. And men NEED FREEDOM.

Any relinquishing of said freedom is moving closer to slavery, where you do not have power over your own life, your own home, your own money, anything. Freedom can be difficult, it puts more on the shoulders of the individual, but as history has repeatedly shown, the removal of freedom has always led to a desperate and poor mass with power being held by a select few in government.

We need men to make sure that doesn’t happen. We need men to stand up, to lead, to topple structures that remove freedom. The only way you do that, as a man, IS TO BECOME SELF-RELIANT. Don’t depend on others, or the state, or anything. Do all you can to be independent. To be independent is to be dangerous in the most glorious way possible.

On Doing What You Can

It’s a simple call-to-action, but one that most don’t heed. We want what we don’t have, and we don’t focus on doing what we can with what we have, and we lose in the end. Most become envious and bitter that they don’t have what they want, but the reality is that they didn’t accept where they were and do the best they could with what they had.

They whined and wished that things were different instead of making them different. Every man should take this quote to heart and don’t try to do anything other than this thing.

If you do the BEST you can with what you have and where you are, you’ll live a good life.

On Being a Man

Men are bearers of responsibility. Men make the tough decisions that no one else wants to make. They go against the tide, against what’s popular, in order to do what’s good, what’s right, and what’s best.

That’s what being a man is, doing what others don’t want to do, and taking pride in doing it.

Making tough decisions, working harder when you’d rather rest, protecting and putting yourself on the line when you’d rather flee to safety.

THE SCIENCE.

Here’s a few giant aspects of our sleep that we often forget.

Sleep has an impact not only on our alertness and our brain, but it can have an even bigger effect on our hormones. These hormones will affect how we build muscle, our motivation, and even how full we feel.

By skipping out on sleep, you:

  • Decrease your natural testosterone by around 15%. If you like great sex with your wife and motivation to crush your workouts, this is important.
  • You decrease your natural Growth hormone, All of a sudden your body doesn’t build muscle and strength like it should… regardless of your age.
  • You’ll decrease your leptin, which is essential for helping you feel full. If you have any dreams of being lean, this is a hormone that helps you feel full longer.
  • You INCREASE the hormone Ghrelin, which means you’re going to be extra hungry. Especially as you pass by McDonald’s on your way to work.

Even if you don’t care about what those hormones are called, you should know when those hormones are out of whack, they’ve got your fitness in a chokehold, squeezing all the life out of your poor, zombie-like body.

SO it’s time to take back your sleep. Before you complain about how you can’t get 8 hours of sleep, Let’s just reevaluate how much time you spend watching netflix, surfing instagram, and other useless crap. If you’re willing to admit you can watch less of that junk, then you’ll be able to slowly increase your sleep time from 5-6 hrs to a more human 7-8 hrs. But as much as it’s about time you spend in bed, if you’re having a terrible sleep, and your body can’t relax, you won’t be getting the necessary sleep to improve your fitness.

So this is what you should do to improve not just the quantity of sleep but the quality of sleep too.

DECREASE THE TEMPERATURE OF YOUR ROOM.

The optimal temperature to sleep in is around 19-20 degrees. Your body is able to relax easier in that temperature, so you’ll sleep easier.

Summer is just around the corner, and if you don’t live somewhere that has air conditioning or in a cool climate, the second best way to regulate body temperature is to have a cold shower before you go to sleep. It will mimic the effects of sleeping in a cooler room by decreasing your body temperature.

Don’t overdo it. Even 1-2 minutes can decrease your body temperature enough to sleep like a rock. (read: how to increase testosterone through diet)

MAKE YOUR ROOM PITCH BLACK.

Research has shown sleeping in a modern environment (lights from streetlights, neighbors), can wreak havoc on your sleep. Your body will start to think that it’s morning and start the mental process to get you ready for the morning including elevating your cortisol level and decreasing your seratonin levels. Cortisol is essential for getting us out of bed, as it naturally peaks from 7:00- 8:00 am, in conjunction with the sun rising.

If you have a low level light in your room, it’s going to elevate your cortisol in the middle of the night, making you feel more tired and reaching for that second coffee as soon as you’re done the first.

Your best option is to use blackout curtains to eliminate all the light from your room. Your next best option if that can’t happen is to grab yourself an eye mask you see people travel with. As goofy as it looks, you won’t look goofy when you’re crushing new weights in the gym.

GET YOUR PHONE OUT OF YOUR ROOM.

Dude. I know you’re super popular on instagram, and you can’t wait to see who DM’s you next, but your sleep quality is suffering because of it. If you sleep with your phone right beside you, your phone is still keeping your brain alert. So even if you can’t hear it because you’re asleep, your brain will still sense there is something important to note. So your body will be jolted out of deep sleep to respond to the “crisis”.

It’s probably you just getting another text, but your brain will think it’s a crisis.

Your phone’s blue light also blunts the production of your melatonin. So bye-bye relaxation hormone.

Moral of the story: Sleep with your phone outside of your room. You’re important enough to sleep with it away from you, and your strength, leanness, and health is worth it.

Oh, you’re using it as an alarm? Time to get an old school digital alarm from Wal-Mart. Your sleep deserves it.

Taking exogenous steroids without doctor supervision might seem fun in the short run, but long run may harm your health.

But when you can see similar health benefits with no side effects JUST by sleeping more.

So do it. Cool down your room, make it darker, and go old school with an analog clock for your fitness to skyrocket.

What’s the harm? No one gets hurt. You get to rub one off and the release of endorphins that comes with it. You get to watch a lady with big boobs and a big bum. What’s more manly than that?

That’s the argument for. It essentially feels good so what feels good must be good.

That can be a psychotic way of looking at things.

There are times when stealing, robbing, beating a human up after they cut you off would feel good, but it is not good.

What follows is not a moral argument, but a selfish one (except for the last point).

This is all about YOU.

Is watching porn good for YOU?

No, it isn’t.

If you want a life of success, you should not watch porn. If you want a good marriage, don’t watch porn. If you want a healthy mind and soul, don’t watch porn. But, again, it ain’t a moral argument, it’s a matter of being at your best.

Being at your best will give you your best life, one filled with meaning and purpose, money, power, respect.

Here we go…

  1. It’s easy (easy isn’t good).

The easy way isn’t the most efficient way. Efficiency is ideal, but this isn’t efficient because it degrades your actual desires for REAL sex (more later).

Easy is for boys. Porn isn’t for a man (nor is it for boys who one day want to be men).

Men take the good route, the hard route, the one that demands something of them because where there is demand there’s improvement.

  1. It requires nothing from you.

There’s no self-development in watching porn and getting the feeling of the visual without the physical.

Being a good enough man that a great lady will want you to bed her, takes work, it takes work on yourself.

Rejection is GREAT!

When a good lady rejects you, she’s either playing a game, or she wants more from you, she wants you to be better than you are, which is awesome. To become better, that’s what we all need.

Not to mention the relationship aspect that real sex requires. You have to become a better man to get a better lady.

Don’t settle, ever.

  1. Porn curbs your desire for natural, real sex over time.

It’s like a drug. The more you watch the weirder the shit you need – or the more powerful of a visual stimulant you need – to get off.

When you first take a drug, let’s say alcohol, one or two can get you tipsy. You lose your inhibitions quickly. Over time you need more and more to create that effect.

However, just like alcohol, you can bring yourself back to that original state if you avoid the drug all-together.

What man would want to watch other humans doing it when he could go it?

It’s weird. See yourself from above, sitting at a computer watching others do it. It’s WEIRD. It’s a product of our society where we watch others not only have sex, but live the life we want to live.

Get off it. Start living a REAL life, doing the REAL thing.

  1. It robs you of sexual transmutation.

Have you ever read Napoleon Hills, Think and Grow Rich? It’s a great book, one of the first and best self-help books ever written.

He talks about sexual energy, it’s powerful. Sexual energy can be built up, pent up, and pointed toward your work and self-improvement.

Ever ‘finish’ watching porn and feel low energy? Feel like not doing anything? Maybe even feel a little gross or depressed?

You’ve robbed yourself of energy that could have been put toward something of actual value.

  1. Watching porn diminishes your manhood, and your testosterone.

“No man is free who is not master of himself.” Epictetus

Do you really have control over your watching of porn? If you don’t, you are not free. You’re a slave to the desire.

No man is a man who is not free.

On top of that, it lowers testosterone.

Study:

According to a study published in the “Journal of Zhejiang University,” ejaculation may set off a subtle hormonal cycle. Ejaculation that is followed by 6 days of abstinence may contribute to peak testosterone levels on the seventh day of after ejaculation. The Zhejiang University researchers discovered that abstaining from ejaculation for 6 days after orgasm has little effect on testosterone levels, but testosterone levels reached approximately 146 percent on the seventh day.

Another study:

This current study examined the effect of a 3-week period of sexual abstinence on the neuroendocrine response to masturbation-induced orgasm. Hormonal and cardiovascular parameters were examined in ten healthy adult men during sexual arousal and masturbation-induced orgasm. Blood was drawn continuously and cardiovascular parameters were constantly monitored. This procedure was conducted for each participant twice, both before and after a 3-week period of sexual abstinence. Plasma was subsequently analysed for concentrations of adrenaline, noradrenaline, cortisol, prolactin, luteinizing hormone and testosterone concentrations. Orgasm increased blood pressure, heart rate, plasma catecholamines and prolactin. These effects were observed both before and after sexual abstinence. In contrast, although plasma testosterone was unaltered by orgasm, higher testosterone concentrations were observed following the period of abstinence. These data demonstrate that acute abstinence does not change the neuroendocrine response to orgasm but does produce elevated levels of testosterone in males.

The more you watch porn the less you’ll want to do it with your lady. You’re robbing her of your manhood, of something spiritual between a husband and wife, and an important part of a good marriage.

The top 5 money making mistakes comes from personal experience. These are those that have been on the top of my list.

They’re mistakes I’ve learned from.

Most of these deal simply with money, some with business, but I’ve seen so many guys make these same mistakes. This has to be covered. Sometimes we do these things without actually thinking they’re mistakes at all because almost everyone around you may be doing the same thing.

Get around wealthy people, however, and you’ll see the difference.

Look through these mistakes, see which ones you’re making, and stop them.

Money is important! Don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise.

Money is power. It’s the power to live life how you want, to safeguard against disaster, and to protect yourself against the government.

Money isn’t a vice. It’s a thing. You can make it into a vice but that’s stupid. Don’t be stupid. Be smart. Plan how you use your money and turn these habits around

Mistake #1 Not building relationships

Odd mistake to start off, but you are who you spend the most time with. If you spend time with billionaires, you’re either a billionaire or will be one, the same is true with poverty. (read: How to Be a Successful Man)

I actually have great relationships with successful people. But that’s because I grew up with a ton of successful go-getters.

I should have – and am working on – building relationships with men who’ve achieved what I want to achieve. Older guys. Mentors, but not the ‘I’ll pay you for your advice type,’ real mentors who want to show you how to achieve.

Of course, the only way to do that is to eventually provide them value. Turn yourself in to an asset that they, too, can benefit from.

Relationships will bring opportunity, and it doesn’t matter where you are, who your parents are, if you’re driven and ambitious, the right relationships can be found, developed, and it’ll do more for your success than anything other than hard work, persistence, and the constant acquisition of knowledge.

Mistake #2 Not having a long term strategy.

When you’re young you think you don’t have to plan or set aside any money, or invest any money. But the sooner you start investing the richer you will one day be, especially if you do something as simple as putting 10% of all money earned into an index fund and let it sit there.

If you want to develop a long term strategy and don’t know where to start, Tony Robbins’ book, Money, Master the Game, may be the best one yet on how to invest wisely and get great returns long term, regardless of how the market performs on the whole.

Mistake #3 A lack of focused persistence.

This is more for business, but it’s the same as above. You have to have a plan, a strategy. You can evolve and adjust, but you should have a strategy in place and see it through with your business as well.

Don’t always be searching for the newest and best. I’ve learned from this the hard way.

I had a great strategy and it was bearing fruit, then I jumped to another and had to start from scratch when I eventually learned that the original strategy was the best strategy.

Do your research. Set it up. And stick to it.

One thing I would urge against, oddly enough, learning from too many sources.

Read books, follow one or two guys online, but leave it at that. I’m not a big mastermind guy. Every time I’ve gone to one I’ve been spread thin rather than focused.

Focus on one strategy and play the long game.

Mistake #4 Avoid credit unless it’s to build something.

Money’s cheap – not your credit card, but lines of credit and loans. Use that cheap line of credit to build something, to invest in something that will bring greater returns, but don’t use your credit card if you can’t pay it off in full.

Get in the habit of, if you have a credit card, paying it off immediately after purchase.

Granted, I didn’t always do this, and my credit card helped me get out of a few major binds when I had no money coming in but expenses climbing through the roof.

The biggest weight off your shoulders is when you climb out of debt, but the worst weight on your shoulders is when you can’t get out from under its weight, so just don’t.

Mistake #5 Understanding needs vs wants.

You have to understand needs vs wants.

Spend on growth, on things like books, courses, programs, and on growing your business, but don’t spend money on stupid things that you won’t want and will soon find out you don’t need.

This is the biggest mistake most guys make, and it makes sense, we’re bombarded by marketing, and it’s GOOD marketing. They show us who we want to be, or an aspect of who we want to be, and we buy whatever tool or apparel or pack or whatever that will make us feel like we’re there.

The truth is that we should be working on becoming better, not feeling better or simply looking like we’re the part.

Spend money on an experience, on business, on acquiring knowledge, and understand the difference between needs and wants.

The Ultimate Morning Routine for Winners: Win your morning, win your day. Win your day, win your life.

The better able we are to break things down, to segment areas of our lives and to win those areas, the more likely we are to win.

Who doesn’t want to win?

Every guy I’ve ever known wants to win and win big, and those that say they don’t have accepted failure.

So how do you set yourself up to win your day and to win your life? You start by winning your morning.

And you NEED routine to win your morning.

1. Rise early.

The advantage of getting up before other humans – especially those who live in your house with you – can’t be understated.

You get quiet time, time to set yourself up for the day and get stuff done that otherwise won’t get done when ‘the day begins’.

Get up before 6am, but even better, around 5am or earlier.

There’s calm to the day when you know what you have to do and you at least somewhat have the time to do it. (read: We Have a Crisis of Purpose)

2. Water. Coffee. Shake.

In that order.

Drink a big ol’ glass of water right when you wake up. You’ve spent the entire night with your organs and bodily functions using water, yet you haven’t hydrated.

You wake up dehydrated, so suck down some water right away.

Then move to coffee.

Coffee is great for energy and mental focus, but a couple of cups before a workout will help you increase your testosterone levels.

Then, an hour before you train (so pretty quickly), gulp down a pre workout shake.

Depending on how many calories you’re consuming, I like the following shake before my workout:

  1. Banana or blueberries
  2. 1.5 scoops of protein
  3. Water or coconut milk
  4. ½ cup of whole, big flake oats
  5. ¼ cup raw cacao nibs.

3. Read. Review.

We rarely get time to read, but it’s one of the most important things we can do in the run of a day. It’s the simple act of learning, sometimes being inspired, but also an act of getting your mind ready for the day to come.

It forces you to live on purpose, not just exist.

Review. Plan your day the evening before, after your work day. NEVER plan your day the morning of. You need to act and hit the ground running, you don’t and shouldn’t spend time thinking about what to do.

In the morning, review what you have to do.

Have everything that you have to do in priority so you can get to work and start knocking them down.

4. Head to the gym for a HARD workout.

My favorite workout is BEAST.

As a man, you’re not just training for the aesthetic, that’s a nice bonus, but you’re primarily training to be ready for anything, and to be dangerous.

BEAST helps you do that.

You train for power, explosiveness, speed, endurance, and strength.

After a couple weeks you’ll notice REAL gains in all of those areas, and your physique will change rapidly.

It’s tough though!

One aspect – maybe my favorite aspect of training – is the mental test, and BEAST tests you mentally every time you train. In our soft society we need to be pushed physically and mentally every day.

5. Work!

That’s it.

That’s your grand morning.

The thing is, that when this becomes habitual your life improves automatically, and from my experience, this routine takes about a week, if not less, to become habitual.

It happens quick because of how good you feel doing it, how at peace you are knowing that you’re improving every day.

It’s intoxicating in the best way.

We Have a Crisis of Purpose

I just opened the pages of a new book, Run with the Horses, by Eurene H. Peterson, and by just opened the pages, I mean I’m 5 pages in. Still, the opening of the book along with a soundbite from Ben Shapiro the Joe Rogan Experience Podcast brought this article about. (read: 15 steps to become a better man)

We do have a crisis of purpose in a couple ways. We have masses of people who have no purpose whatsoever, who wander through the days in a monotonous existence merely playing a part and not really living nor striving toward something, and then we have another massive group who have the wrong purpose and the wrong idea of purpose altogether. Forgive me because I can’t remember the book or the exact number, but kids today cite ‘fame’ as their mission in life at about 80%, where it was maybe 5-10% in the 60’s or 50’s.

I saw “we” because I struggle with purpose as well, and I’m a driven guy. I work between 9-12 hours a day up to 6 days a week. I have an idea of what I’m building, why I’m building it, who I’m building it for, who I’m here to serve, and what I’m here to do. At the very least I know that people sacrificed a lot to give me an opportunity at life, let alone a successful one, and many of whom I don’t know or know how they did it.

On my Mom’s side her dad brought his family over from Italy after the Second World War. Her mom, my Nonna, a saint of a woman who recently passed, fought off a Nazi to save my mom’s life when she was less than a year old, and they raised a great woman in the process.

My Dad’s side, his old man worked 3 jobs to raise his kids and I got a great dad out of it.

There are others, the soldiers that fought for my freedom whom I’ll never meet, the leaders who created a capitalistic and free society that I benefit from and so on.

I get that being here is a gift, and one that’s paid back by improving daily, by being good to others, by being as successful as I can be in whatever realm I’m in. (read: Life Sucks. How to Make it Suck Less.)

Purpose goes deeper though, it’s a matter of deep meaning that most lack. I can’t comprehend meaning without faith, but for this article we’ll have to.

We are facing a crisis of purpose, where fame and entitlement are rampant, and it needs to change.

This being a site for men, it’s truly up to us to take the lead on this.

Man Up

Purpose and responsibility are tightly intertwined. Yet, men by the millions buck their responsibilities, leaving others to pick up after them, care for them, and coddle them.

Men are leaders. A man isn’t born, he’s created. A society that doesn’t teach manhood because the fathers and grandfathers were never around will be robbed of leaders, possibly for generations, maybe even for forever.

When you have a family, a thing that almost every man should have, that becomes a large part of your purpose, but men are avoiding that responsibility because responsibility is difficult, it’s tough, stressful, and it makes life far more difficult.

Your Purpose is Not Fame

This survey from Bankrate found 28 percent of Americans who earn less than $30,000 a year play the lottery at least once a week. That is, those that need it most throw their money away. Instead of working and saving and investing, they discard it, burn it on a dream rather than on things that are under their control.

Fame is fickle, it’s also not under your control.

Yet fame is at the height of our society. It’s not the good men who get acclaim, but the weak, the soft, those who pretend for a living that become famous.

No matter what society’s values are, yours have to be based on truth and reality and an understanding of what’s actually important.

The book I mentioned earlier opens with a quote from William McNamara:

My grievance with contemporary society is with its decrepitude. There are few towering pleasures to allure me, almost no beauty to bewitch me, nothing erotic to arouse me, no intellectual circles or positions to challenge or provoke me, no burgeoning philosophies or theologies and no new art to catch my attention or engage my mind, no arousing political, social, or religious movements to stimulate or excite me. There are no free men to lead me. No saints to inspire me. No sinners sinful enough to either impress me or share my plight. No one human enough to validate the “going” lifestyle. It is hard to linger in that dull world without being dulled.”

There are few men. “There are no free men to lead me. No saints to inspire me… It is hard to linger in that dull world without being dulled.”

We’re all in this dull world being dulled by things that aren’t real. Fame isn’t real. Relationships, today, are often merely surface level or not personal at all existing only online. (read: to be great you have to be a little weird)

Struggle Reveals Purpose

Dark, tough, hairy situations are avoided today. Instead of facing down evil or coming face to face with our own mortality, we live a dull life that slowly grinds us down.

The answer isn’t necessarily easy, nor should it be, and it’s not always simple, but starting it is.

The answer is more.

Accept more responsibility, not less.

Take on more work, not less.

Do more in your life, not less.

End your day crawling into bed without an ounce of energy and at least you’ll feel pride in who you are and more importantly what you did. (read: the Lost Art of Fulfillment)

Forget About the Totality of it All

Today we’re also free to think about life’s greater questions and our place in this world. This can be great, but too much time thinking about the macro without focusing on the micro and you find yourself being useless, lost, and wandering rather than pursuing.

You have a definite purpose today. You know what it is. You have to get shit done and do it well. You have to feed your family, to run your business, to do good work, to train your body, to be better than you were yesterday.

Sometimes that’s enough, more than enough, because when you end your life having done that every day your purpose will be as grand as the legacy you leave.

Live on Purpose

You have people that have sacrificed for you, others that depend on you, and you have ambition. Set your sights in a direction, not in the direction of fame but of becoming great in every way you can. Serve others. Have your success provide jobs, give back, enable your family to thrive in their lives.

Live well today, that’s essentially what we’ve lost – among other things. We spend less time in the moment, less time doing what we can with what we have, and more time comparing who we are, where we are, and what we have to what others show they have.

How Modern Society is Ruining Manhood (and what to do about it)

Is there an active attack on your testosterone levels and on your manhood? There most definitely is one socially, as men are taught from a young age to be soft, emotional, more passive, less aggressive, and less dangerous by a soft, extremely feminine and left-leaning education system.

There’s also the rise of identity politics, where victimhood is prized and applauded and the honorable virtues of manhood, competition, aggression, dominance, self-reliance, and winning, are condemned.

But is there an attack on our hormones, those building blocks of manhood that make men, men? The main hormone is testosterone, it’s responsible for our increased muscle mass in comparison to our wonderful female counterparts, as well as our body hair, aptitude to take more risk, and even aggression, you know, the things that serve us well when we’re standing at the city gates or our doorstep keeping those who are inside safe and ignorant of the battles being waged on the periphery. 

Something is making men produce lower testosterone levels, and it doesn’t appear to be an increasingly sedentary lifestyle, though it’s a factor, that can explain the massive decline found in a Massachusetts Male Aging Study where they found an age-independent decrease in male testosterone levels of about 1.3% each year, with the total testosterone levels of an average male independent of his age in 2004 were found to be 17% lower than those of an average man who was the same age in 1987.

This steep decline in manhood, in the hormone that makes men, men, is absolutely shocking and has to be seen as an epidemic, though it’s not being given nearly enough attention.

Why You Need High Testosterone Levels

From a young age young men, otherwise known as boys, display very different ways of entertaining themselves. We like battle. We like guns. We like danger and adventure.

Boys don’t like tea or talking on the phone about emotional issues, we prefer to be outside always nearly injuring ourselves in the pursuit of something that feeds our soul, makes us feel alive, and makes us feel like men.

Testosterone both helps us be better at being men, and it acts as a reward system for being better at being a man.

You get a boost in testosterone when you compete, another increase when you win. You get increases in the short term and in the long term from working out with heavy weights. You get an increase in testosterone from having sex. You also see in increase in testosterone when you make money.

High testosterone also helps you burn more fat by recruiting more fat as a fuel source, repair muscle tissue, helping you build more muscle, and it greatly impacts your libido and sex drive. High testosterone also reduces your likelihood of experiencing depression, certain cancers, and heart disease.

Men are better when their testosterone levels are high. Society is better when our men have high testosterone levels.

Yet, this important hormone is on the decline in men. In this article we’ll look at the society-wide factors, not just the individual ones like poor diet, inactivity, incorrect training that we’ve already covered at length on this website.

FACT: Your Grandfather’s Testosterone Levels Were Double Yours

At the aforementioned 1.3% decline in testosterone, my grandfather’s testosterone levels at my age would be 74% higher than mine.

What has led to this? What are the factors in our society that have dramatically degraded male testosterone levels across society and age?

We’ll go through them, from a real desire to effeminate men, to innovations that are having a negative effect on our hormones.

Radiation

If you look at the two main culprits (your laptop and cell phones, but mainly cell phones), our testosterone levels have nearly halved since they became popular.

From a correlational standpoint, this deserves a ton of attention. Cell phones become popular, testosterone levels in men plummet.

But is it causational or is the cause, the increasingly sedentary life we live as a result of technology more the culprit of this decline, or something else all together?

There is evidence that testosterone levels plummet when exposed to radiation, and that sperm count does the same.

From faradays.co — a company that’s created a boxer that limits radiation exposure to the testicals (just bought my first pair) — this image shows the correlation between an increase in both cell phone use and the power of the airwaves used to transmit data, and the decline of both sperm count and testosterone levels in men.

Again, causation, or mere chance that the two would align so dramatically?

When it comes to sperm count, radiation definitely has an effect.

In this study, cancer patients saw a 35% reduction in testosterone after treatment.

The radiation from cell phones and laptops is particularly concerning. Radiation emitted from laptops can be measured using a device called a gaus meter, with the 0.3 milligauss level being considered safe, and many laptops have readings higher than 200 milligauss level.

Don’t rest your laptop on your nuts, where the majority of your testosterone levels are produced and all of your sperm resides.

In this study 32 healthy men with normal semen levels gave a sperm sample that was then divided into two equal portions (A and B).

“Portions A of all involved men were placed for 5 hours in a thermostat, and portions B were placed into a second thermostat for the same period of time, where a mobile phone in standby/talk mode was placed. After 5 hours of incubation the sperm samples from both thermostats were re–evaluated regarding basic motility parameters. The presence of DNA fragmentation in both A and B portions of each sample was determined each hour using a standard sperm chromatin dispersion test.

The number of spermatozoa with progressive movement in the group, influenced by electromagnetic radiation, is statistically lower than the number of spermatozoa with progressive movement in the group under no effect of the mobile phone. The number of non–progressive movement spermatozoa was significantly higher in the group, which was influenced by cell phone radiation. The DNA fragmentation was also significantly higher in this group.”

Electromagnetic Fields

“A study from Zhejiang University compared 77 men who work at a power plant that generates electricity with 77 controls with low occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields.

The power-plant workers, compared to the controls, had statistically significantly lower levels of testosterone (β = −0.3 nmol/L; p = 0.015), testosterone-to-estradiol ratio (β = −15.6; p = 0.037), and NF-κB (β = −20.8 ng/L; p = 0.045).

From this article on MDMag.com: “The researchers then analyzed how each of the power plant workers used electronic devices in private life, and they found still more evidence of the effects of electromagnetic fields. Higher mobile phone fees, more years of mobile phone usage, and higher home electric bills were all found to have significant effects on testosterone levels and testosterone-to-estradiol ratios.”

The thing that hasn’t been studied is the effects of radiation in general, as it increasingly surrounds us on a daily basis. I’m on my desktop as I write this, with my cell phone a few feet away, and a couple more feed away from that, my wireless modem or whatever they call those things.

As the technology gets stronger and our use increases is this decline in both testosterone levels in men and overall sperm counts going to continue to fall?

Is removing ourselves from technology all-together going to be the solution that will bring back our manhood?

While radiation and electromagnetic fields are a concern, chemicals seem to be an even greater concern as many of the chemicals we use, touch, clothe ourselves, lather ourselves with, and even consume on a daily basis have been conclusively shown to increase estrogen in men, which is one of testosterone’s arch enemies.

The Biggest Culprit is Likely Chemicals

We’ve become not only dependent on, but surrounded by and filled up with chemicals that lower testosterone and increase estrogen in men.

These chemicals that increase estrogen levels in men are found everywhere, including:

  • In the pesticides used on fruits and vegetables
  • Deodorants
  • Shampoo
  • Cologne
  • Sunscreen
  • Cleaning products
  • And plastics.

We have plastics in our clothing, we brush our teeth with plastic bristles and brushes, with toothpaste filled with chemicals that increase estrogen. We lather ourselves with deodorants so we don’t stink, and shampoos, and soap.

The good news is that for most things there’s now a natural alternative – thanks to capitalism doing its thing. The problem is that most people don’t know what to look out for.

Being that these chemical estrogens are everywhere, in our food, on our food, genetically integrated into our food,  and so on, it’s tough to rid them completely from our lives, but we can come relatively close.

A few steps to take:

  1. Never carry or heat food in plastic, always use glass or metal.
  2. Buy your produce from a farmer you know, a farmer’s market that actually doesn’t use pesticides, or buy organic. The problem, not all ‘organic’ is actually organic and devoid of chemical estrogens, and the fastest growing sector in organic produce is coming from the shady land of China. If you can grow your own, with good seeds, do it, otherwise, just do your best and don’t worry about this too much.
  3. Buy good clothing that’s made out of cotton or real materials, not polyester (common in workout clothing).
  4. Buy natural deodorant, shampoo, soap, and toothpaste. There are options for all of this very readily available today.
  5. Filter your water with a carbon filter.

The more you can move away from the chemicals that we’ve adopted more and more, and from the radiation that’s a relatively new addition and coincides with this decline in testosterone we’re seeing across all ages in men in the West, especially, the greater chance you have to create the high testosterone levels you need to live at your best.

There are other factors, of course.

The Fall of Manhood

From the journal Human Reproduction Update:

“Researchers – from Israel, the US, Denmark, Brazil and Spain – said total sperm count had fallen by 59.3 per cent between 1971 and 2011 in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. Sperm concentration fell by 52.4 per cent.”

“Sperm count and other semen parameters have been plausibly associated with multiple environmental influences, including endocrine disrupting chemicals, pesticides, heat and lifestyle factors, including diet, stress, smoking and body-mass index… Therefore, sperm count may sensitively reflect the impacts of the modern environment on male health throughout the life course.”

Researchers all over the world are waking up to the fact that sperm count and testosterone levels are declining, yet they’re not fully certain as to what the cause of the decline is. It’s likely a number of factors.

That is, modern life is detrimental to male sperm counts. That is, modern society is detrimental to male sperm counts. Thus, men have to de-modernize, we have to do the non-modern.

What’s ‘modern’? Being surrounded by plastics and chemicals that lower our testosterone levels. Sitting inside all day. Watching TV. Worrying about things that don’t need to be worried about. Whining and complaining. Spending more time on our butt than on our feet. Spending more time inside, with central heating and the ease that is modern life.

The fall of manhood, this decline is sperm count, in testosterone, in the manly virtues that made western nations so great, so free for everyone, so powerful, and so opportunistic, are failing and falling because we’re living in a way that is not human.

Live Like a Man

To ask an alpha male chimpanzee to not aim to be the alpha is asking him to be something that is not in his nature. To live a sedated, easy life, is to ask men to do something that is not in their nature.

Being fat is not a natural state for a human, especially a human male. You just didn’t get fat 10,000 years ago. It was impossible. Other men wouldn’t go out and hunt so you could sit there gorging yourself. To eat, as a man, you had to hunt.

The chemicals, the pesticides, the cleaning products, the radiation, all of this goes against our nature. To not compete, to not adventure, to not dare, goes against the masculine soul, and our bodies, our societies suffer by us not living manfully.

So, get off your ass.

Get outside.

Lift heavy things, push your body.

Surround yourself with natural things as best you can.

Eat animals, lots of them. Saturated fats are vital for testosterone levels, as are the non-pesticide latent fruits, potatoes, and carbs that help you lower cortisol.

Let’s reclaim our manhood even while our modern society aims to crush it.

How to Be a Great Man

In our heart of hearts we all want to know how to be a great man. When we’re young we feel as though the future is limitless.

We have dreams and anyone who tells us that they’re unrealistic becomes our arch enemy – for the moment at least.

And then life curbs what we attempt. It tells us that there are limits to what we can do and what we can achieve.

We begin to think that greatness and these unlimited ideas about what the future holds aren’t for us. That we just weren’t destined for them, that we’re average, mediocre at best.

We can improve, but only in a limited fashion. The greatness we see and read about isn’t for us.

We feel this because we’ve failed to do anything great, but are these feelings true, and what kind of man actually achieves real greatness?

When you study history you realize a few things:

  1. There are those who are born into the position to achieve greatness that most aren’t, but at the same time, there are a lot of them born into this position who never become great.

So even with birthright there’s a select few who actually achieve greatness.

  1. In most cases, greatness is won not through one’s birth, but through their effort, persistence, and what they’re willing to give to their quest.

The examples of the latter far outweigh the former.

And we all have access to the latter. However, are we born with these characteristics that greatness demands or do we develop them?

I’m sure some are born with more discipline than others, but for the most part things like effort and persistence are decisions, and ones that we can all make.

The Anatomy of Greatness

When you get into the mind of great men, usually by how they act in failure, you see differences from average men, but these differences aren’t innate abilities, rather, they’re decisions that they choose to make.

Men like Theodore Roosevelt, Captain James Cook, and Frederick Russell Burnham repeatedly dealt with failure that would lead most to question whether or not they’d achieve anything.

All great men are faced with failure, even boredom and monotony and prolonged stretches where it seems like their fortunes will never turn.

What doesn’t change – at least not for long periods – is their habits, and their constant belief in their quest or at least in the fact that it’s better to improve incrementally every day than to not (ie through hard work, discipline, and persistence).

What you find is that it’s not talent or an anointed greatness, but decisions.

  1. Don’t let failure knock you off course for too long, instead, learn from it.
  2. Work hard every day, don’t let emotions stop the work.
  3. Commit to certain habits that make you better every day.
  4. Fight imposter syndrome with logic, instead of asking ‘who am I do to X’, say, ‘who am I NOT to do X’.

Example: who am I to give advice about manliness?

Well, I have unique perspectives and experiences that, when shared, have made a difference. I have imposter syndrome from time to time but that prick gets removed as soon as the voice begins to make noise.

Don’t let limiting beliefs stand in the way. You can change your beliefs.

Now, can you achieve greatness?

Yes, but it’s not just an ambition, it’s a duty.

It’s a waste to be anything less than what we can potentially become.

Too many men think they’re relegated to where they currently are, they think that who they are is who they always will be.

That doesn’t have to be the case…

You are your virtues. Your virtues dictate how you act, how you think of yourself, what you can achieve, and what you’re here to do, and what you actually do.

Every great man has developed certain virtues that have helped him rise from the deepest depths to the greatest heights.

You prove that not by reaching a final end, but by becoming great, by being great, by becoming the man you can potentially become.
